Aromatic Awakening

Aromatherapy is an effective way to replenish your spirits by vaporizing essential oils to enhance your moods. Burning incense or resinous essential-oil beads like copal, sandalwood, or myrrh can easily be done by lighting a small amount in an incense holder or ashtray. You can diffuse essential oils into the air with a humidifier or place 4 to 5 drops in an aromatherapy candle diffuser.

To create different moods with essential oils, try the following:

To invigorate and energize:

grapefruit, lemon, lime, cardamom

To ground and calm the mind:

vetivert, sandalwood, chamomile, pine

To relieve depression:

bergamot, mandarin, lemon verbena

To ease anxiety:

rose maroc, lavender, marjoram

Kiwi Kick

Kiwi fruit is an exceptional source of Vitamin C. One large kiwi fruit has more vitamin C than a medium-sized orange. When blended with sweet honeydew melon and fresh mint, this delicious smoothie provides a vitamin C surge to boost the immune system to ward off colds and flus as well as promote collagen production for healthy skin and hair.

3 kiwis (about 1 cup) peeled and diced
1 cup fresh honeydew melon, diced
2 tablespoons freshly chopped mint leaves
1/3 cup low fat vanilla yogurt

Place ingredients in a food processor (Note: It’s best to use a food processor rather than a blender, as a blender will crush the kiwi seeds, making the drink bitter.) Puree until smooth. Serve in chilled glasses.

Sumatra Coconut Body Scrub

Freshly shredded coconut gently exfoliates the body without being too abrasive, while its conditioning nutrients leave your skin feeling soft and fully hydrated.

Small bowl

1/2 cup freshly grated coconut meat

1 ounce glass bottle

1 ounce almond oil

5 drops clove essential oil

2 drops patchouli essential oil

9 drops sandalwood essential oil

3 drops vanilla essential oil

Place freshly grated coconut in bowl and set aside. Fill glass bottle halfway with almond oil, add essential oils, cover and shake well. Top off with remaining almond oil, cover and agitate a second time. Mix oils and coconut thoroughly in bowl. Gently rub mixture on body. Remove with warm, damp cloth after 5 minutes. Rinse off well.

Soothing Vetivert Balsam

The smoky, musky notes of sandalwood and vetivert in this blend are very grounding to the mind while the soft floral notes of jasmine add a hint of sweetness to the oil. This is a powerful antidote to relax overstimulated nervous systems. Use this massage oil before going to bed.

Makes 1 ounce

1-ounce glass bottle

1 ounce carrier oil

5 drops sandalwood essential oil

4 drops vetivert essential oil

3 drops jasmine essential oil

Fill the bottle halfway with carrier oil. Add essential oils and shake well. Top off with remaining carrier oil, cover, and agitate a second time. Apply where needed.

Chamomile Face Serum
Chamazulene, the active ingredient in German chamomile, gives this essential oil its characteristic deep blue color and is responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

During the colder months, this serum is one of the most effective remedies to calm rosacea or almost any type of dry, itchy skin condition. The soothing properties of chamomile will have a calming effect on the emotional level as well. This is important since most skin imbalances have their roots in emotional stress and not just an external irritant. Evening primrose oil has a reputation as a healing agent for scars and is added to this blend to promote tissue repair along with avocado oil, which is rich in fatty acids.

Makes ½ ounce:
½-ounce glass bottle
¼ ounce evening primrose oil
3 drops German chamomile essential oil
6 drops neroli essential oil
4 drops lavender essential oil
¼ ounce avocado oil

Fill the bottle halfway with evening primrose oil. Add essential oils and shake well. Top off with avocado oil, cover, and agitate a second time. Apply to affected areas.
